When to Seek Professional Help

By G G

Weight management can feel like a solo mission — but it doesn’t have to be. Sometimes, the best progress comes when you reach out for professional guidance. Knowing when to ask for help can save time, frustration, and health risks.

The Science

The NHS and NICE both recommend seeking medical or specialist support if you’ve struggled to lose weight despite consistent lifestyle changes, or if your BMI is 30 or above, or 27.5 for some ethnic groups (NICE NG246 , NHS Obesity Overview ).

Evidence shows that structured, supervised programmes produce significantly greater weight loss than self-directed efforts. A Cochrane review found that people enrolled in professionally supported interventions lost 3–5 kg more over 12 months compared with those going it alone (Cochrane Review 2018 ).

If emotional or psychological factors play a role — such as binge eating, anxiety, or low mood — behavioural therapy can help. NICE recommends cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) as an evidence-based treatment for emotional or disordered eating.
